Lichen Sclerosus

  • Created in Skin Conditions

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic skin condition most commonly affects the genital skin. The affected areas become thin, white, crinkled, irritated, and/or intensely itchy. Blisters and sores can also form. Left untreated, the condition can lead to scarring and increase an individual’s risk for skin cancer, known as squamous cell carcinoma. Lichen sclerosus most commonly affects post menopausal women and pre-pubertal girls. Though the skin lesions can appear anywhere, it is most typically found on the vulva (area outside the vagina), perineum (area between the vulva and anus), and around the anus. Treatment options include various topical prescription medications.
